Trolley Time

This week, I finished my last session for the “People and Their Passions” exhibit - which opens next month.  Without a doubt, the wildest session was the last one.

Diane is a fan of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo - who created some very unusual paintings during her career.  We decided to do a portrait of Diane, based on Frida Kahlo’s painting “The Bus”
To give the piece a retro feel, we chartered one of the McKinney Street Trolleys and asked a few of Diane’s friends to fill in as the other bus passengers.   The resulting session was an absolute blast.  You will have to wait until next month to see the final image - but I thought I’d share a few of the outtakes.

This image was probably the most interesting of all the shots, but was also the most bizzarre.

I just love the way there are so many things going on in the image.  In the end, we decided it was a bit too strange to use for the final painting - but it was certainly one of our favorites.

homeward bound
Here we are, relaxing on the trolley, as we head back to our cars.

Of course, we couldn’t have done it with out our fabulous trolley conductor, Michael.  To get the final shot, I was standing on a stepladder outside, shooting through the window.  Michael had to stop the trolley and stand out in the street directing traffic.  He even posed in a few of the shots with us.  Before we left,  I took this shot of him outside the trolley.

Despite all the planning, this session was a blast.  Its amazing how much fun you can have when you throw all the rules out the window and just push the creativity to the max!

  1. When I told Larry my idea for the shot, I had no idea how quickly he made it happen. The trolley was ingenious and we did have a great time. I think that I will have to present something even more outrageous next time and see where we end up!! The photos were more beautiful than I thought possible given the surroundings. It really was a blast. Diane

  2. Larry and Diane- this takes the cake! I cannot stop studying the photo on the trolley! Amazing. Cannot wait to see what you chose for the exhibit piece too!
