How Much Do Professional Headshots Cost?

I get some version of this question all the time, usually from someone who's already spent twenty minutes clicking through photographer websites without finding a single number.

I think that's genuinely frustrating, and honestly a little unnecessary. So let's just get into it.

In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, professional headshots can run anywhere from around $125 to well over $1,000. That's a big range, so here's a more useful number: most established, reputable studios land somewhere between $150 and $350 for a single-look session, with additional retouched images usually running somewhere around $75 each. For me, a session starts at $175, which falls right in that range.

What Actually Affects the Price

A few things tend to move the number up or down.

Session length and number of looks. A quick, single-outfit session takes less time and costs less than one where you're bringing two or three different looks. More outfit changes generally means more time, and more time generally means a higher price.

Studio vs. on location. Coming to a photographer's studio is almost always the more affordable option. If you want the photographer to come to your office instead, expect an added fee - most photographers charge somewhere between $100 and $400 extra to travel and set up on location. My own on-location fee runs $250 on top of the session.

Team or group sessions. If you need an entire office or executive team photographed at once, most photographers offer some kind of sliding group rate, since photographing several people in one visit is more efficient than pricing each person individually.

Retouching. Some photographers include a level of retouching in the base price; others charge extra for it. I include it, and my own approach is to keep it light - smoothing out a stray blemish, maybe evening out a tooth that's more yellow than you'd like. The goal is for it to look like nothing was done at all. You should look like your best self on a good day, not like a different person entirely.

Turnaround time. This varies a lot by photographer - some take a week or two to deliver finished images, others turn things around much faster. If speed matters to you, it's worth asking directly rather than assuming.

Is It Worth It Compared to a Phone Photo?

I understand the instinct to just crop a decent vacation photo or ask a coworker to snap something in the break room. Phone cameras really have gotten remarkably good.

But a headshot session isn't really about the camera. It's about lighting shaped specifically to flatter your face, posing that makes you look confident instead of awkward, and someone whose entire job for that block of time is making sure you look like the most capable version of yourself.

I had a client a while back - a female executive - who told me right up front that she was nervous, because she "just looks bad in photos." We worked through the lighting and made a few small adjustments to her pose, and by the end of the session she was genuinely stunned by the result. She told me she wanted extra prints to give to friends-of her business headshot!! I still get a kick out of that story.

That's really the difference a real session makes. It's not that your phone can't take a technically fine picture. It's that a good photographer can help you see yourself the way other people already do.

So, How Much Should You Budget?

If you're weighing your options in the Plano or Dallas area, plan on somewhere between $150 and $350 for a single professional headshot session, with $75 or so per additional image beyond what's included, and expect an added fee if you want the photographer to come to you rather than the other way around. Anything dramatically cheaper than that is worth a second look at what's actually included - and what isn't.
