When Is the Best Time to Schedule a Family Portrait?

There's no perfect month to schedule a family portrait - but there is a pattern I see play out every single year.

Life is busy no matter what month is on the calendar. Between work, school, sports, vacations, and holidays, there's always another reason to put it off until "things slow down." The problem is, they rarely do.

Since I'm often asked this with the holidays in mind, though, I can tell you what I actually see happen year after year.

October and November are, by far, the prime months. Families want their portraits printed and in hand in time to give as Christmas gifts, which means the timeline has to work backward from there: the session itself, then time to come view and choose your images, then the printing process, which can take a few weeks on its own. By the time you add it all up, December is simply too tight a window to start from scratch.

Every year, without fail, families reach out in late November hoping for a Christmas portrait, only to find the calendar is already full and there isn't enough time left to get everything done.

January and February, on the other hand, are noticeably slower. My honest guess is that it's less about anyone's schedule and more about their wallet - most families are still recovering from the holidays and need a month or two before portraits feel like a priority again.

If you're flexible on timing, that gap is worth knowing about. Sessions in January and February tend to be easier to book, and you'll have more room to choose a date that actually works for your family instead of squeezing into whatever's left.

My advice is simple: if your family has the time now, now is a great time. The best portraits aren't determined by the season. They're created when your family can relax, enjoy the experience, and preserve this chapter of your lives before it quietly becomes the next one.
